A good social media CTA can work wonders — attract more readers to your content, generate sales, and drive more leads and conversions. What convinced you recently to sign up for a free trial month or download a guide? Can you remember that? That was an effective call to action or call to action (CTA). In today's challenge, you'll find tips for creating effective calls to action.
What you need to know to write effective CTAs
A successful CTA drives more business. In the digital world, that means more clicks, more sales and more engagement. CTAs are particularly useful because they’re trackable — a few clear words or clever CTA placement can have a significant impact on insights. Even if you’re not interested in specific data, a CTA can help you achieve a goal—simply by asking the reader to do it. If you regularly ask your readers to do something — please share, reply, retweet, contact me — you’re making sure your content is contributing towards a goal.
Instead of simply triggering diffusely friendly feelings about your last social media post, motivate readers to take action and continue to interact with your brand.
Keep the following questions in mind when writing:
- What action do you want to take?
- Who should do that?
- How can I motivate my target group to do so?
Strong formulation
In the worst case scenario, your call-to-actions consist of individual words such as “here,” “next,” or “more.”
Such buttons are not very sales-promoting. CTAs must be highly click-like and activating.
Invite your users to action with activating words and make it clear what to expect after the jump. A good example of a strong call-to-action could be: “Order here now”, “Continue reading the article here” or “Go to the new product line”.
Arousing urgency can also be an important factor in the formulation: “only for a short time”. Ideally, a CTA is two to three words.

Instagram CTA in caption
Most Instagram users tend to leave a like or comment if the corresponding image or video is accompanied by an interesting text. So be creative with the texts as well, tell your followers a story and finish it off with a call-to-action.
Every image you post should have a strong call to action. Popular call-to-actions on Instagram include asking fans to double tap if they like the post or tag a friend in the comments. You can also tell them to sign up for your newsletter or buy your product. Building a call-to-action is a small reminder to your fans what else they can do with your content than just watching it. It also works wonders to increase engagement while getting more attention to your posts.
