Sometimes words aren't enough to describe what's already a big idea in your head. Sometimes it's easier to present goals visually to help other people understand them, and sometimes you can't literally express moods and feelings associated with your project goal because they're just too abstract. That's exactly what a mood board is for!

Many factors — from brand color to font color — play a major role in what the emotional impact on the customer is. In this case, a mood board can help you out by collecting a few ideas for implementing your brand and for your overall appearance. If you don’t know exactly where to start in this regard, mood boards from other attractive companies can be useful sources of inspiration.

From a professional point of view, a mood board is a useful tool for inspiration, confirmation, leadership and communication. How can it express affirmation and leadership? Well, if you’re already sure of your brand, then a mood board can support this and convey your values tangibly in a visual context. A mood board serves as a management for the company if you are aware of your brand identity and want to focus on designing a logo, business cards, a website or other marketing material.

If you have several projects running for your company that require a mood board, don’t put them together under any circumstances. That only causes confusion. Keep track of things by creating multiple mood boards for different topics, each with clear goals.

Useful points for creating a mood board

  • Goal: What do you want to achieve with the mood board?
  • Concept: Should your mood board be created digitally or with glue and scissors?
  • Inspiration: Bookmark online or save all images in a separate folder. Collect and cut out everything you like and fit your project for the offline version without any pre-selection.
  • Order: In the end, you probably have far too many materials — consciously choose what you really like or helps you with your project and take enough time to sort it out. For example, you can arrange your material thematically or by color tone if it is relevant to your goals.
  • Mood board: Now it’s time to create your mood board and put all the elements together
  • Result: Take a close look at everything and combine, filter and draw a conclusion from it.

TODO:

step 1

Write down 3 words that describe your feelings:

Example: awake, extroverted, exciting

step 2

Write down 3 words that describe your style:

Example: Elegant, Luxurious, Simple

Now present all these feelings with materials of your choice. You can fall back on everything you personally like. Different patterns, textures, colors, clippings from the newspaper. Try it out. It’s a nice journey to find one another.
